Grief Ritual

What is a Grief Ritual?

In this ritual, we create a safe and sacred container where grief can be held, witnessed, and expressed. When we turn toward our sorrow rather than away from it, we rediscover vitality, connection, and the quiet intimacy that grief and gratitude share.

Drawing on the work of Francis Weller (The Wild Edge of Sorrow), we will explore the Five Gateways to Grief, then invite you to place your grief into the hands of the village — a circle of open-hearted witnesses, as humans have done across time and culture.

Two altars will be tended:

  • Fire — for expressing our losses

  • Water — for offering gratitude

There will also be time in nature for personal reflection, grounding, and integration.

“Sorrow is part of the earth's great cycles, flowing into the night like cool air sinking down a river course… Even though sorrow never disappears, it can deepen our connection to life and lead us to sources of wonder and solace.”
Kathleen Dean Moore

Testimony

*“A heartfelt thank you to Steve and Taji for holding space at the recent Grief Ceremony. The love and compassion you shared were second to none. Losing a child brings many layers of grief, shifting over time. After a profound change during my Vision Quest, I didn’t think there was more to unravel — but there was.

This Ceremony reminded me of what I teach: grief doesn’t get smaller; our lives grow around it. Thank you for helping me release another layer and for allowing me to feel truly held. There are so few places where we can arrive with no mask, no armour — simply as we are.”*

What is Grief?

Grief is the pain we carry for what has been lost to us.
It may arise from:

  • the death of a loved one

  • the end of a relationship

  • the love, support, or recognition we longed for but never received

  • shame or guilt we still hold

  • illness, aging, or declining vitality

  • environmental sorrow

  • ancestral burdens passed quietly down the line

  • or simply the difficulty of accepting our own mortality.

Grief is not a problem to be fixed. It is a natural human response — an expression of our capacity to love.
